Series # 113 of The Master Sessions of Marvin Smith brings together Rob Fisch, Ben Newsome and Lew Scott together with MASTER Marvin Smith in another of the over 1200 video examples of how to create the correct teaching environment for young players to learn about traditional JAZZ MUSIC and its' ROOTS. In the old days, a young player would have to stand on line and might never have the opportunity to "RUB SHOULDERS" with THE MASTERS or they were sent home and told "DON'T COME BACK AND PLAY THAT SHIT AGAIN ON THIS STAGE". It was felt that they were DISHONORING TRADITION. Marvin Smith has created an opportunity for young players to learn about the ROOTS of the music and for the players to be directly exposed to MASTERS in his new 48 track studio which is STATE OF THE ART. Players in the 60's and 70's would NEVER TOLERATE some of THE BULLSHIT that today's younger players deal out. In the old days, there was NEVER TIME for EGOS and they wouldn't be tolerated. Today, everybody thinks they're "A MOTHER FUCKER, BAD ASS PLAYER and the truth is, few are saying anything new or different. Few are even bullshitting themselves thinking that tey're playing when in fact, they don't even know how to swing because they can't touch on their inner feelings. Many are simply copying players that they would like to play like, instead of searching inside themselves for the TRUTH OF WHO THEY REALLY ARE and in MOST CASES, they're simply NO BLOW, INEXPERIENCED WITH LIFE, NON-COMMUNICATORS OF TRUTH!. I can say some of these things because I used to think I was a "PLAING MF'R" and the truth was, I wasn't saying SHIT. After experiencing medical problems, deaths of loved one's and being hit by a car as a pedestrian, I then started learning that I was a beautiful human being and had compassion for others but I had to learn how to communicate it and SHED INTERNAL ANGER and FRUSTRATIONS THAT MY OWN EGO WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR CREATING, NOT THE GOODNESS THAT WAS IMBEDDED IN ME FROM THE TRUE MASTERS THAT I PERSONALLY GREW UP WITH. I WAS DISHONORING TRADITION AND CULTURE. I NEVER GAVE IT AWAY. I NEVER THOUGHT OF ANYONE BUT MYSELF. I WOULDN'T FEED THE POOR OR HELP ANYONE BECAUSE I WAS TOO BUSY TRYING TO HELP MYSELF BECAUSE I HAD LITTLE FAITH AND LITTLE RESPECT FOR OTHERS. WHY? BECAUSE I THOUGHT I WAS THE SHIT. WHY? BECAUSE I WASN'T IN TUNE WITH MY PATHETIC SELF AND THE TRUTH THAT I AM A NO BLOW MF'R. If you can say this and mean this, you will grow but you MUST PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH and BECOME A COMPASSIONATE, LOVING, GIVING HUMAN BEING. YOU CANNOT SERVE SELF, YOU CAN ONLY SERVE OTHERS BEFORE SELF. These are some of the things that I have learned in my almost 65 years on earth and the main thing that I have learned is little happens overnight, or quickly. YOU MUST PAY YOUR DUES. IF YOU CAN'T DO THIS THEN YOU MUST STOP PLAYING AND DO SOMETHING ELSE BECAUSE CREATIVE MUSIC IS NOT YOUR BAG. IF YOU CAN'T "LIVE" THIS MUSIC THEN STOP DOING IT. YOU MUST COMMITT TO YOURSELF, TRUTH, TRUTH THAT YOU'RE ONLY A SMALL CHIP OF THE WHOLE. YOU'RE A GRAIN OF SAND ON THE BEACH BUT WITH OTHERS, YOU CAN BECOME THE BEACH. YOU CAN ACTUALLY BECOME THE MUSIC AND ENTER THE SERET WORLD, THE WORLD WHERE LOVE, JOY AND ULTIMATE PEACE RESIDES. Listen carefully to both Rob Fisch and Ben Newsome working together creating beautiful harmony and JOY. Series 112 Marvin Bu Ga Lu Smith MASTER SESSION

Series #112 part 1 has that beautiful, natural sound that the old analog studios like VanGelder's used to produce. Jazz recording has changed since the introduction of digital. Marvin Bu Ga Lu Smith has designed a way of capturing music by using HIS EARS and training students like Andrew Greeney to use their own, individual talents. Andrew has spent much time under MASTER MALCOM CECIL, who produced and recorded Stevie Wonder. Marvin is shown here in his new 48 track, state of the art studio space and the sounds of this session speak for themselves. Few words can give you the depth of tone color that originates here as Ron Petrides, David Schnitter and Robert Kopec, all join in to push Marvin's session into that OLD BUT NEW TRADITIONAL JAZZ ENVIRONMENT that Marvin has created for the benefit of all young players so they can now have the opportunity to play along with THE MASTERS. All the players on this session are MASTER PLAYERS that come together as examples of how to communicate their individual personalities through colorful sound vibration. The solos that are heard here throughout this evening are great examples of strong, musical vocabulary and the communication is on the highest level. It's very spiritual and each player knows exactly what he wants to say to the next. I loved watching the video work that was done here but I especially liked the DEEP, RICH SOUND of each player's instrument. I believe that the sound that comes out of Marvin's drums is unique not only because of his special way of tuning them but also because he tunes them to the PITCH OF THE MOMENT and plays them that way as well. Marvin's TOUCH on the drum head is also very special and is one of his TRADE MARKS. Series 111 Part 1 Marvin Bu Ga Lu Smith Master Sessions, with Robert Kopec and The New 48 Track Studio using CUBASE SOFTWARE.... "THE BOMB"

There's certainly quite a bit of intense emotions that go along with a 42 year friendship with a genius like Master Marvin Bu Ga Lu Smith. I have witnessed first hand the workings of a unique creative mind that can influence others and motivate them to do the best that they can. Marvin is COMPASSION and giving to all everything he knows from his own experiences. The quality of the brand new 48 track studio lies in the ability of the folks doing the sound engineering and if you consider the fact that Andrew Greeney, one of Marvin's students, has learned much from studying with the famed Malcome Cecil who was involved with Stevie Wonder. Andrew has also learned much about music by using his great ears that he has developed during all the experience he has gained by being part of Marvin's drum crew. When you listen to the intricacies that develop between Marvin and Robert Kopec on this Series # 111, you can hear THE BREATH OF BOTH THEIR SOULS BLENDING TOGETHER IN BEAUTIFUL HARMONY. Yeah, HARMONY, that's the secret to Marvin Bu Ga Lu Smith's teaching. Marvin is about PEACE, HARMONY and COMPASSIONATE GIVING TO THE NEXT PERSON. He has built an empire of a magical studio that he can leave to those students that have been loyal to him. I am so delighted to hear this music recorded in Marvin's new 48 track studio. This is the second recording and with both Marvin and Ben Newsome they touch on some great examples of communication that is so natural it is as if they are having a beautiful talk with each other and using some of the most expressive sounds that I've ever heard. It is so easy to follow all of the musical ideas as Marvin Bu Ga Lu Smith is such a great Leader, drummer and educator. Using the "DUO FORMAT" of a band, two sounds like an entire orchestra rather than simply two cats playing. Marvin's drum soloing is so masterful and expressive. The sound of thise drums using Cubase software is so dynamic. I think that this music is so unique because Ben Newsome is a very beautiful, natural player. One of the things I hear Ben doing so great, is his approach to honoring SILENCE BETWEEN THE NOTES. I hear many of the elements of John Sousa in Marvin's playing. He is so talented as he creates new expressions bar after bar of interacting with Ben. Ben Newsome's sound is so FULL. I hear much of Marvin's influence in Ben's playing just like I hear Marvin's influence on all his drum students. Marvin is able to teach music to players of any instrument as he motivates students to develop their own unique sound to match their unique personality. If the opportunity comes about, students of all instruments should not only listen carefully to this music but try and get in touch with Marvin as he is actively teaching and has many students besides drummers. Many colleges have had Marvin lecture and do clinics. If you listen carefully to the sound that Marvin extracts from all his drums, you can actually here the individual personality of the cymbals, each tom tom. the snare and the bass drum all coming together as their own orchestra and that is exactly what Marvin Bu Ga Lu Smith does, HE ORCHESTRATES!
This series #109 of The Master Sessions of Marvin Bu Ga Lu Smith, Better Than Hollywood, is the second time recording the DUO OF MARVIN BU GA LU SMITH and BEN NEWSOME and is a great example of perfectly HARMONIC COMMUNICATION. I enjoyed listening to Ben's colorful clusters of fast, uniform sound designs. I also LOVE the way Marvin Bu Ga Lu Smith BUILDS EXPLOSIVE COLORS and the way both players are able to HONOR SPACE and BREATH while they FLOW NATURALLY TOGETHER. Their trading has such wonderful tones of expression that come together to make a great ending to each new idea and a door opener for new ideas, bar after bar!

Series # 108 Marvin Bu Ga Lu Smith Master Sessions IN NEW 48 TRACK STUDIO with Ron Petrides and Lew Scott

Tonight marks the premier, first session of MASTER MARVIN BU GA LU SMITH recording in the NEW 48 TRACK state of the art studio.
