Master Dr. Marvin Smith takes over right here and puts down all the harmonics that he just heard from the Sax, Guitar and Bass and lays down one of the best drum solos that I have ever heard. Marvin swings like no other because Marvin becomes total spirit along with the other three and together, as a quartet, this group has no matches in today's 2012 Jazz World. I truly believe that this group is on their way to much more than just a Grammy Award. I think that the engineering with Andrew Greeney and the Mastering and Master Production and Engineering by Dr. Marvin Smith gives this recording such a unique, natural sound capturing all the little niceties that are sometimes missed at other studios. The New 48 track studio is using Cubase and the great ears of Dr. Marvin Smith to mix this. I am over-joyed at the results that I am hearing here. I would like to see more play on the radio of The Santi Debriano, Abraham Burton, Marvin Smith, Ronnie Ben Hur Group and I would like to see these results quickly because The Music Was Done Without Any Rehearsing. When Santi showed up at Dr. Marvin Smith's Studio in Poughkeepsie, Marvin and he were talking out in the parking lot abouy the old days that both of them had in Archie Shepps band over 30 years ago. At that time, Kenny Werner was the piano player and this tune, Ujamma was performed with Marvin, Santo and Kenny in that band. In that parking lot outside of Marvin's studio, he met the great Abraham Burton and Ronnie Ben Hur. Abraham was a Cat that I remember well, playing in Art Taylor's Wailers along with my friend and Marvin's friend, Tyler Mitchell. Well they started laighing in the parking lot about all the old days and without any pre-meditation or rehearsal, this music started to go down within 10 minutes of the four geniuses meeting and the rest is now history in the making. Damn, I feel so good after listening to this music and how beautiful it was blended and recorded that I can say that I haven't heard anything like it ever. It is so individualistic. It is the product of the love that these four masters put together as they broke musical bread at the table of Bumar Records/Compassionate Sound & Motion's 48 Track table in Dr. Marvin Smith's new personal recording studio. I am elated and proud to be a part of this project and will like to say that all musicians that experience Dr. Marvin Smith's drumming, are all brought into his personal love and musical AURA and all end up playing on the highest level that they've ever played on. Dr. Marvin Smith has an ability like John Coltrane had on all his brother musicians. Cats want to play even harder with Marvin because he makes them feel so beautiful and so free in their groove and all of them become HARMONIC DRUMMERS through their own instruments. This 10:22 minutes and seconds flies by because it is so intense,so loving and so truthful. NO EGOS HERE, JUST FOUR GENIUSES FOLLOWING EACH OTHER'S PASSION and blending all this love into a brand new musical communication. I'm lovin it so,so much. I loved listening to Abaham Burton's quartet featuring the great Masters Santi Debriano, Dr. Marvin Smith and Ronnie Ben Hur. What a great swinging example of pure genius works with all four of these players having a magical journey together here in 2012, the year of great changes in Jazz. Duke Ellington Masters - drum solo

Rufus died in April 1990 and had a bad bout of illnesses, especially arthritus which prevented him from doing much playing after his stint with Duke which ended around 1973. Rufus took over for Sam Woodyard as Duke's drummer and played with Duke right up till the time Duke died in 1974. I remember Rufus as Duke's nephew Stephen James and I always went to the NY performances of Duke's. I was living at Steve's house on 58th st. in NYC during the mid to late 1960's. Elvin Jones was very found of Rufus. Rufus had such amazing stick control that he cound execute a long roll with his hands way over his head, far away from the snare head and it was such a sight to behold. Rufus played in Maynard's band and Basie's band before Duke and he also had his own quintet for a very short while. I think that he should have gotten much more recognition as a great drummer but he remains today, in 2012, one of the UNSUNG heroes of Jazz Drumming. Today, my friend Dr. Marvin Bu Ga Lu Smith is one of the living UNSUNG heroes in 2012 and if it's the last thing I ever do, I will make him better known to the general public as there are few living today that can come close to his unique MASTERFULNESS in all areas of Jazz drumming, especially when you witness his amazing FREE FLOWING, MOMENT TO MOMENT, UNREHEARSED MOTION. Marvin is and always will be one of the greats, just like MAX,ELVIN,ART and my friend(RIP) Rufus Jones. Another great who was an unsung hero of drumming was my friend, Benny Golson's son Reggie(RIP). Reggie introduced Azar Lawrence to Elvin Jones and McCoy Tyner. We miss all you drummer cats and now we put our energy behind THE TRUTH IN 2012, DR. MARVIN BU GA LU SMITH. Marvin's brand new state of the art recording studio is a 48 track set up with expansion capability to 96 tracks by daisy chaining. Marvin has started a program teaching women all about drumming both using sticks with he and Andrew Greeney instructing and Koko Jones,formerly Whitney Houston's percussionist teaching the women hand drumming. Cecil Mcbee received a grammy in 1989 for "The Tribute To John Coltrane CD. Listen here to this brilliant piece of his music as he performed with Master Dr. Marvin Smith and Kirk Lightsey at Live At Visiones on the last night of their performance. Shouldn't these geniuses at least get a grammy nomination for the :Live At Visiones" performance and the wonderful compositions that they wrote: The Peacemaker by Cecil McBee, Habiba by Kirk Lightsey and Steve Habib's and Marvin Smith's "Life Has No Color"?
