Knowing Marvin for over 42 years, I know just how the song is going to play out. I can hear it deep within my own heart because I always leave myself open to learning something new about my own life. Marvin has a unique, uncanny way of driving musicians that he performs with, into A ZONE OF TRUTHFUL FEELINGS that takes them up into a new higher level of playing. Yeah, I can attest to this fact because everytime I've ever played with him, I can feel a LOVING ENERGY coming from him stronger than from any other player that I ever performed with. Listening and also watching this music, you can actually see his positive AURA as well as hear it coming through his unique sound, a sound I've NEVER heard before coming out of drums. His touch is much LIGHTER than you might think and his power comes from GIVING and being compassionate.
Michael Purcell is just starting to play in Marvin's Sessions and I am amazed at his listening skills and his individual voicing in both his "comping" and solo work. Michael has a compassionate drive that HARMONICALLY comes to the surface chorus after chorus, exploding with JOY. Robert Kopec is one of the finest bass players I have heard because of his beautiful driving energy that compliments every beat and chord within this session. All three of these players have NEVER played together as a unit before this Series 120 and that makes this such a beautiful capture on video. The music is FRESH and UNREHEARSED just like each moment of TIME but instead of passing without a sound, these three Masters are able to open your heart and draw compassion from you so that what might have been SOUND UNHEARD, has become SOUND HEARD AS THE COSMOS CONTINUES TO MOVE and SHIFT.
This Series # 120 represents GENTLE FIRE. Dr. Marvin Smith continues to motivate players and his MAGICAL PRESENCE is always felt in everything you hear him play. You can listen to and watch this yourself as Michael Purcell's talent and Robert Kopec's gifts are so dramatic and colorful within this TRIO OF EXCELLENCE! The beautiful solo work of THE DOCTOR, MASTER MARVIN SMITH is apparent in "THE PROOF IS IN THE VIDEO" and this SERIES along with the 1200 others that have been documented clearly show THE GENIUS OF THIS 2011 LIVING GENIUS, LEGENDARY IN EVERY WAY AS A TRADITIONALIST and also INVENTOR OF NEW WAYS OF PLAYING MOMENT TO MOMENT JAZZ MUSIC WITH THE SPECIAL FLOWING GIFTS OF THE UNIVERSE.
