Pioneering jazz drummer Max Roach was born on Jan. 10, 1924 in Newland, N.C., and grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y. Roach began playing in New York jazz clubs in the early 1940s. From those early days until his death in 2007, he never stopped creating and exploring new possibilities for jazz drumming.
In this installment of Take Five, we remember Roach with five recordings from his amazing body of work. As always, we ask you to leave your favorite Max Roach moments in the comments section below.

Max Roach was one of the greatest drummer. Max honered my friend of 42 years Dr. Marvin Smith who is 62 years old this past December. Marvin has been educating young musicians all his life and Max Roach always honered him. I am grateful to have known Max and to also have been friends with Elvin Ray Jones,John William Coltrane, Jimmy Garrison and many others including the late, great Reggie Golson(RIP). I can appreciate all that Max Roach has done for this music along with all the other friends that have passed. Today, Dr. Marvin Smith is alive and well as he journeys on to teaching and preserving Jazz Tradition. Max would be proud to be there watching Master Dr. Marvin Smith doing the work that needs to be done today in 2012. Marvin was written up in the February 2011 issue of Modern Drummer Magazine and he was part of Sun Ra's Arkestra and Archie Shepps quartets. He is a living legend.
