Latest Majestic CD Notes

These are the entire liner notes written by Steve Habib for Marvin Bugalu Smith's CD MAJESTIC on CD Baby and itunes.

I have entered into the center of this music as I listened on my 66th birthday today Dec. 4th.2012
Search For The New Land starts out with both Rob and Chris blending and stroking the melody line so gently that the notes start penetrating and when Marvin and Lew lay down the groove

it is almost orgasmic, Still, Joel is so gentle and colorful with his chords framing and Chris Pasin's beautiful trumpet solo, starts to inspire my inner most avenues, that now I am starting to go far away from all my troubles and I forget myself and all my daily problems, by the time Joel's guitar solo enters. Listen how carefully Marvin's drumming supports each player's ideas, Wow! the mix is so great, When Rob steps in and adds rainbows of colors on his soprano, I am now there, in the magical Majestic space that Marvin and the four others have taken me to and I am starting to tingle with joy, joy that can only be expressed by listening more and more to the entire CD. It is truly some of the greatest music that I have ever heard and should be considered for a Grammy. It has given me the ultimate joy and now I am enjoying the second song...
Little Devil also starts out with both Chris and Rob blending and massaging the melody line. The opening solo by Mr. Newton is classical and simply sparkling with air and stars of pure balance and togetherness. Joel has that special way of gently climbing into your heart and staying there as Marvin stimulates things then all of a sudden Rob takes over and places this musical vehicle into another gear. His clusters of chordal sounds and like he is an orchestra himself. I've noticed that Marvin brings out such individualism in each player and yet Master Marvin continues to motivate one soloist into another. Listen how Pasin takes over the conversation from Rob and does it so smoothly and without any hesitation. Notice how Lew Scott is always underneath every phrase that each player states and how "gloce-like" he works with Marvin placing those deep full bass tones under those wonderful drum tones that only Marvin can pull out of those cans of joy. Yeah, Marvin's sound is certainly one of the most unique of any drummer I've ever heard. He plays so lightly but yet he draws such amazing POWER out of that kit. Listen carefully to his solo on THE LITTLE DEVIL. Marvin has that unknown mysterious MAGICAL and MAJESTIC SOUND.
Blue Stride is one of my favorites as I simply love the way Rob comes right out and drives the entire song home right from the very start. Man, this is SWINGING TO THE MAX. Notice how every song is played to the max and that the music swings so hard. There's never any doubt that this could be one of the best CD's out there right now. I loved Lew Scott's bass solo on this BLUE STRIDE tune. The balance is always there and Marvin's trading is just like sitting on a SEE-SAW in the center with each side going up and down in perfect time.

You Don't Know What Love Is happens to be one of my all time favorites and by listening to it you might hear some very gentle, special notes that bring you back, maybe even to your childhood. Rob starts out delivering the melody so sweetly and with such professionalism that by the time Chris enters and confirms the melody the tune is on its way to a very high level and a level that few have achieved who have ever played this piece. There is such spirit here that I was almost in total tears listening to this especially while sitting in the hospital in Manhasset Long Island while my mother(87) a painter and artist, has been suffering. This music heals as I also sang this tune in my heart to her. These CATS have done it tune after tune and both Chris and Rob should be noticed carefully the way they spoke to each other here. Rob is KILLIN ME with all his rainbow clusters. Chris has such great command of the trumpet and delivers so easily, any thought that comes "IN THE MOMENT". I loved Rob's breathing on this tune, it had such passion. Lew Scott is always there with that deep velvet cornerstone of the groove and deep solo statements of pure love. The tune ends with such a great projection of gentle force.

Wurlitzer Waltz does it. Listen hard. Yeah, it spells SWING and there is no limit to where it will take you. This song bounces with joy all over the place and I'm lovin every second of the groove. This quintet of Marvin Bugalu Smith's is doin it all the way through and this final cut is actually only the start, the start of something big and powerful full of internal energy that I only felt while sitting listening to Coltrane,Jones, Tyner and Garrison ay The Half Note On Hudson Street in NYC.The very end of the song starting at 9:32 all the way to the very end you'll hear Marvin's absolutely MAJESTIC drum solo played right through the beautiful meldody depicting sll the solos taken by each player and his collection of all their statements played melodically through the drums and bringing you into a healing trance. Few drum solos that I've ever heard captures all the musical statements of the players' then translates them through the secret.mystical magic of the drums with the tonal quality and power of the wind, fire, earth and light that makes up the entire rainbow of MAJESTIC colors that I feel is classical and typical of this music genius that is called Dr. Marvin Bugalu Smith. Again, LOVE ALWAYS and ALWAYS LOVE.....HABIB I have attempted to use words that are in my heart throughout my listening and responding to this music. I know I was there, inside this music with each of these CATS because the Masterful recording and mixing was so great that I haven't heard this style of capturing music since I sat at VanGelder's in Englewoods Cliffs on route 9W when John,Elvin,McCoy and Jimmy were recording and Bob Thiel was producing. Marvin has done a great, special job producing, recording in his own studio and mixing so beautifully. I give congrats to Marvin,Andrew and each of the Master players on this CD.
LOVE ALWAYS and ALWAYS LOVE.... STEVE HABIB 12/04/12 my 66th Birthday. Enjoy as I have and listen to it many times and you'll hear new things always.

Blues For Marvin & Steve "LIVE AT VISIONES"

"LIVE AT VISIONES" Blues For Marvin & Steve by Dr. Marvin Smith/Steve Habib featuring: Dr. Marvin Smith, Drums Cecil McBee, Bass Kirk Lightsey, Piano Arrangements and composition by Dr. Marvin Smith/Steve Habib copyright 1992 Marbib Radio Television/Bumar Records Mastering by Dr. Marvin Smith/Steve Habib We had such a great time the entire week. Reggie Workman and many, many others were helpful in making suggestions about the entire week of sessions. I was very sick and in and out of the hospital at Mt. Sinai all year during much of 1992 and 1993. Marvin and I contacted Buckey Nesbitt a friend of ours from Englewood, NJ and after the Visiones sessions, we went to The Martha's Vineyard Jazz Festival and the group performed there for two days with Drew Gress on bass, John Esposito on piano, Jim Finn on Tenor Sax and Dr. Marvin Smith leading the group on Drums. We continued to call the group "THE EXPERIENCE" but it was the start of The Melting Pot Drum Group. Marvin and I wrote many of the songs including "Life Has No Color, Blues for Marvin and Steve, The Dance Of The BU GA LU and so many more. Terrence Blanchard and his group also performed at the Martha's Vinyard Jazz Festival as did Christian McBride and his group, Onaje Alan Gumbs and many more. I witnessed our group tearing up the bandstand each night. No stone was unturned as Marvin lead the way to help make that Festival knowm since it was the first year of its existence. Terrence Blanchard was very responsive to the tremendous audience response that Marvin and the Cats received. Much of the effort that was placed in all the music during that rough year for me was Marvin thinking about the music and the healing properties that it has. The music actually made me better and I continued on my journey as a drummer/percussionist/composer/producer/ broadcaster/journalist and multi-instrumentalist. I did join Bernard Purdie on many gigs along with Tony Purrone,Sal Giorgianni, Nat Dixon, Ruben Wilson, Marvin Horn, Joshua Breakstone, and on and on it went but I continued to fight diseases and medical situations. In 2008 I was run over by a car in Great Neck, Long Island, simply crossing the street with a cup of coffee in my hand. That tore me up and I was moving around with two canes and lots of prayers, listening to many songs. Yeah, the music is healing medicine and I can attest to it. I'm still learning about life and appreciate every moment of it. Hanging with Reggie Workman, Arnie Lawrence, Cecil McBee and Kirk Lightsey was enlightening and their contribution to the entire week's performance is well documented here. Just listen to Marvin screaming out with joy on all the songs that will be posted. This is the 2nd one we put up on you tube, the first was "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise". "Life Has No Color" is a song that Marvin and I wrote. Kirk Lightsey wrote "HABIBA" and Cecil McBee wrote"The Man Of Peace(The Peacemaker)". The spirit during the entire week at Visiones Jazz Club was so strong. Every night was packed with no seats available during the first two sets. Many perfomers that were "IN TOWN" that week who were not working, ended up in the club to witness Marvin's explosive energy and SWINGING PLAYING along with Kirk Lightsey's harmonics and deep touch. Cecil McBee had many folks coming into the club just to approach The Grammy Winner. Kevin Lager was playing so very hard all week long and Jim Finn expressed himself in the most spiritual way. The music says it all and I am certain that it will move you into a very happy zone of PEACE. LOVE ALWAYS and ALWAYS LOVE, HABIB Recorded by Tom Tedesco & Jon Rosenberg engineers June 7th,1992 was the last night of a 3 day performance of Dr. Marvin Smith's group The Experience. All three days were done with college students of Jazz Music in mind. Students from The New School For Jazz, The NYU Music Student Department and Faculty of The New School Jazz were available and many actually attended all of the performances including some of our close friends like Arnie Lawrence(RIP) and Reggie Workman and so many others as this entire project was a not for profit event and to use all content, songs included for the purpose of teaching. Dr. Marvin Smith was also an adjunct professor at the time of this video series along with several of the other performers. Steve Habib Playing On Table At The Cove IN THE MOMENT

This past 6 weeks have been rough as I've been going to the hospital daily to visit my 87 year p;d mother who has had a blood infection, A FIB, heart valve problems and many other complications that have surfaced. My mom is a professional artist and has been painting for 80 years, a true Master, her name is Selma Falk. She has been alone since my step father passed away over 40 years ago. She has been an inspiration in every way and her art is beautiful music. I will start displaying her masterful paintings soon. She is determined to start painting again when she recovers and her physical therapy is successful, possibly as soon as another month. LOVE ALWAYS and ALWAYS LOVE, HABIB

I enjoyed Rich Rodriquez's singing and Robert Kopec's great bass playing on this piece. The song was magical and truly had such great emotional impac. This Cat, Rich Rodriquez has the real deal voice. You can hear breath and deep feeling as he made this song come so very alive. Listen carefully to Smith,Kopec and Savitsky building and building continuously behind Rodriquez. Wow! What a professional, out of sight recording. I love these Cats and what they do with this music, presenting to the live audience at The Bull & Buddha. LOVE ALWAYS and ALWAYS LOVE........ HABIB

Funky, funky, funky, joyful magical drumming tight here by The Master Dr. Marvin Smith. This song was a great ending to a new beginning at The Bull & Buddha. I hope that all of the listeners get a chance to go there and hear this live. Savitsky is a Master sax player and Master Robert Kopec is one of the finest bass players on the scene. As always, Dr. Marvin Smith puts together the best Masters for all his concerts. He is THE FORCE behind all the music and he always drives his musicians into new territories of LOVE. The music starts out with a "CARAVAN" of fun and that's the name of this great Ellington tune, "CARAVAN". The band of course is a caravan of fun right here at The Bull & Buddha. It is another great concert night with Dr. Marvin Smith the leader of this trio with Dave Savitsky on sax and the great Robert Kopec on bass. Listening to Dave play that smooth and very FUNKY SAX, made me realize how great it is to blend all styles of music together and come out with great jazz that young people can easily understand as the grooves are always being placed together in such a wonderful, funky way. Master Robert Kopec does it for me everytime I hear him throwing down hard with The Master, Dr. Marvin injecting such pleasurable spirit behind all the players that get together with him every Thursday evening right here in poughkeepsie NY at this magical place called Bull & Buddha and by the way, the food and the customers are all sensational. Listencarefully to this great tune and enjoy THE CARAVAN of magical love. Love Always and Always Love..............HABIB. Yeah "THERE IS NO GREATER LOVE" and that is the truth when you listen to all the joy that Dr. Marvin Smith,Robert Kopec and David Savitsky put down on this song. I loved the exchanges between Dr. Marvin Smith and the other two Cats as they traded continuously with each other and again, the music was so very easy to understand. The feeling within the music was PURE FLOW HARMONY and the song moved along effortlessly and then, all of a sudden, Smith and Kopec traded 4's so brilliantly and with breath and nice space. Marvin always makes me want to cry with joy everytime I hear him play. By the way, I must compliment Andrew Greeney on the great engineering and Dr. Marvin Smith on the Masterful Mixing. The mic placement was great as it is always difficult capturing this great quality of sound in any venue outside of a controlled studio. LOVE ALWAYA and ALWAYS LOVE..........HABIB

Dr. Marvin Smith Visiones 1st Set 6 5 92 1

Dr. Marvin Smith Visiones 1st Set 6 5 92 Th
The name of this world class group is Dr. Marvin Smith, "The Experience". They will take you on your own, individual experience and you will feel better and more joyful after listening to this. The bass playing of Cecil McBee and the drumming of Dr. Marvin Smith are so tight and closely connected throughout this CD. The entire moment to moment, unrehearsed music, is the way Marvin does everything. Things flow naturally without any blocks or hesitation. There were times during this performance where vapors of smoke actually came out of Marvin and formed a clear view of his aura which appeared to be in the shape of 2 circle at least 10 feet each that formed the number 8. I can remember how he once expalained about the 8 as he showed me on his snare drum a diagram of six sections all around both circle and how they are intersected and at that point, the "1" is where the intersection is and both the top circle and the bottom circle are like a tree where you see the trunk and all the branches above the ground but underneath the tree are an equal number of branches coming out of the trunk called tree roots. Yeah, very interesting about FLOW and his easy to understand graphic imaging of the 8 and the tree. Dr. Marvin Smith is one of the most interesting people I have ever met. I love to experience "THE EXPERIENCE". This is certainly a history making event and I am grateful for all the music of Dr. Marvin Smith. There are over 1300 CD's and videos documented of this genius and all the other great masters that he has chosen to perfoem with. What a wonderful educational experience. Song for Max, a drum solo

Song for Max, a drum solo When Dr. Marvin Smith and I were at The Blue Note in NYC to visit Max at his gig, Max who loved Marvin, still turned to me and said, "Habib, why don't you Cats hang out in my dressing room upstairs here, while I finish the next set or take a walk and get something to eat, then come back and we'll hand out after the next set." You see, what you're going to hear in the next 4 minutes and 37 seconds is some of the finest drumming you've ever heard and this is exactly what Max didn't want Marvin to play sitting in at The Blue Note, so because of this tremendous spiritual, flowing and harmonic playing that Max knew Marvin could accomplish, Max felt that it was his gig and there was no reason to chance folks in the audience seeing Marvin in the house and the possibility of Marvin coming up on stage and getting all the attention. You see, Max was one of Marvin's influences and Marvin was able to get much information about what Max does simply by watching Max move and flow around the drum set. Yeah, Dr. Marvin watched and interacted with all the masters and figured out what each of them knew. Marvin executed and put all of them together as one and developed who he is. Marvin's sound is a combination of all the influences in his life starting with his own brother, Earl "Buster" Smith, Elvin Jones, Art Blakey, Louis Hayes, Roy Haynes, Kenny Clarke,Danny Richmond, Billy Higgins and, one of Marvin's major influences was Max Roach. This track is a song dedicated to Max Roach, called "Song For Max" and I think that all of the masters that motivated Marvin to learn drums, helped him to find his own, unique voice. Dr. Marvin Smith is a musical genius. His drumming is a representation of his entire life and all the beautiful, colorful, harmonic sounds that you hear represented on this track, is truth, honesty and the ability to generate musical medicine that will heal you if you listen enough and allow it to enter into your soul. Marvin Smith's AURA is shaped like a hugh figure 8 and when you watch him play live you can see it. The flow is constant, moving moment to moment, breath to breath and heart beat to heart beat. Everything that comes out of Dr. Marvin Smith's drums is PURE LOVE and you can receive this geniune feeling that he projects, simply by standing near him before he even touches a drum. If your luckey enough to have the chance to be a musician that performs with him, you'll find that he will motivate you to reach higher levels in your playing, higher than any level you've ever experienced with any other drummer. I mean what I'm saying here because I've experienced this myself, perfoming with him in several projects, especially the all drum group that we both formed in 2000 and 2001 called "The Melting Pot Drum Group" which recorded over 14 tracks together at Tedesco Studios with Dr. Marvin Smith, Steve Habib, Koko Jones,Jack DeSalvo, Tom Tedesco, Tom DeSteno and Hugh Brodie and Steve Cohn, who were added in on some of the tracks. That direct experience with Marvin and experiences like playing together in Hugh Brodie's Cosmic Ensemble and so,so many other times, tells me that if I don't tell all of you that I am healed from many major medical conditions and several near death experiences because of my close friendship with Marvin and the 42 years that we've been playing music together, then I would be robbing you of "actual proof", "actual truth" and I need to bring the entire truth about this genius friend of mine to you. Now listen carefully and make sure you listen at least three different times to this track and be open to THE SPIRIT OF COMPASSION and most IMPORTANTLY, THE SPIRIT OF LOVE. Dr. Marvin Smith cares about people, all people and this drum music is THE REAL DEAL. Listening to it, you will see why he has such a positive influence on everyone around him. You'll also see how his drumming can bring new life to the very musicians that have had direct experience with him. John Coltrane had that ability to influence and motivate people without even saying one word. Marvin Smith, we call him Dr. Marvin Smith, also has that same genius ability that "Trane" had. Listen to all the music that Dr. Marvin Smith has recorded and you will aee. THE PROOF IS IN THE MUSICAL TRACKS and ALL THE VIDEOS that he has recorded. There are well over 1300 of these and I am honred to be on at least 2 dozen of them. Yes, The Song For Max is an important message, Check it! LOVE ALWAYS and ALWAYS LOVE...........HABIB

A different kind of blues

A different kind of blues
Everything in this tune is finally released here after so many strong emotional mountains were climbed throughout this musical jorney. "A Different Kind Of Blues" is so great. I loved the colorful, tasteful tones of Dr. Marvin Smith's drumming and the joyful guitasr expressions of Roni Ben-Hur. Abraham Burton is such a joy to hear and Santi Debriano has that "magical touch of deepness" on his bass. Again, another great master piece of sound color goes down by the four great masters of 2012. This is the group to listen to. They are creating new, fresh avenues in music because together, they are like one. They are all in service to each other, leaving egos outside the studio doors. This results in the finest "moment to moment" unrehearsed music that I have ever heard. They are a gift to all other musicians and to their listeners. Again, it's all Grammy nominated potential stuff here. Listen carefully to these Cats and listen to them at least three times on every track of theirs. I thank each one of them for the opportunity of allowing me to express myself in words but my words aren't one tenth of the power of their music, so please listen at least three times and I am repeating myself just in case you've missed the importance of that statement. Nothing happens just one time around. Now, enter into meditative love through the power of silence just like the breath between all of their notes. LOVE ALWAYS and ALWAYS LOVE...........HABIB

Abraham's song Santi Debriano bass

Abraham's song Santi Debriano bass

This song made me cry several times and I listened to it three times before I realized how many different beautiful, colorful levels of music were put together in this genius composition written by Master Santi Debriano, one of the finest composer/bass players in the world today. I think that Santi is one of "THE UNSUNG HEROS" of 2012. Marvin Smith,Santi Debriano,Abraham Burton and Roni Ben Hur, have all "DONE IT" and way beyond many others and will be making dents into the future of music by the time 2012 comes to an end. I love this group and hope they record more this year. They're a benefit to all of the musical Art-Form that I call musical medicine to heal the soul from illness. LOVE ALWAYS and ALWAYS LOVE,

Ujamma Santi Debriano bass

Ujamma Santi Debriano bass

Master Dr. Marvin Smith takes over right here and puts down all the harmonics that he just heard from the Sax, Guitar and Bass and lays down one of the best drum solos that I have ever heard. Marvin swings like no other because Marvin becomes total spirit along with the other three and together, as a quartet, this group has no matches in today's 2012 Jazz World. I truly believe that this group is on their way to much more than just a Grammy Award. I think that the engineering with Andrew Greeney and the Mastering and Master Production and Engineering by Dr. Marvin Smith gives this recording such a unique, natural sound capturing all the little niceties that are sometimes missed at other studios. The New 48 track studio is using Cubase and the great ears of Dr. Marvin Smith to mix this. I am over-joyed at the results that I am hearing here. I would like to see more play on the radio of The Santi Debriano, Abraham Burton, Marvin Smith, Ronnie Ben Hur Group and I would like to see these results quickly because The Music Was Done Without Any Rehearsing. When Santi showed up at Dr. Marvin Smith's Studio in Poughkeepsie, Marvin and he were talking out in the parking lot abouy the old days that both of them had in Archie Shepps band over 30 years ago. At that time, Kenny Werner was the piano player and this tune, Ujamma was performed with Marvin, Santo and Kenny in that band. In that parking lot outside of Marvin's studio, he met the great Abraham Burton and Ronnie Ben Hur. Abraham was a Cat that I remember well, playing in Art Taylor's Wailers along with my friend and Marvin's friend, Tyler Mitchell. Well they started laighing in the parking lot about all the old days and without any pre-meditation or rehearsal, this music started to go down within 10 minutes of the four geniuses meeting and the rest is now history in the making. Damn, I feel so good after listening to this music and how beautiful it was blended and recorded that I can say that I haven't heard anything like it ever. It is so individualistic. It is the product of the love that these four masters put together as they broke musical bread at the table of Bumar Records/Compassionate Sound & Motion's 48 Track table in Dr. Marvin Smith's new personal recording studio. I am elated and proud to be a part of this project and will like to say that all musicians that experience Dr. Marvin Smith's drumming, are all brought into his personal love and musical AURA and all end up playing on the highest level that they've ever played on. Dr. Marvin Smith has an ability like John Coltrane had on all his brother musicians. Cats want to play even harder with Marvin because he makes them feel so beautiful and so free in their groove and all of them become HARMONIC DRUMMERS through their own instruments. This 10:22 minutes and seconds flies by because it is so intense,so loving and so truthful. NO EGOS HERE, JUST FOUR GENIUSES FOLLOWING EACH OTHER'S PASSION and blending all this love into a brand new musical communication. I'm lovin it so,so much. LOVE ALWAYS and ALWAYS LOVE...........HABIB

Abraham's song
I loved listening to Abaham Burton's quartet featuring the great Masters Santi Debriano, Dr. Marvin Smith and Ronnie Ben Hur. What a great swinging example of pure genius works with all four of these players having a magical journey together here in 2012, the year of great changes in Jazz. Thanks for the chance to express myself with my hopefully musical words. LOVE ALWAYS and ALWAYS LOVE... HABIB

Duke Ellington Masters - drum solo

Rufus died in April 1990 and had a bad bout of illnesses, especially arthritus which prevented him from doing much playing after his stint with Duke which ended around 1973. Rufus took over for Sam Woodyard as Duke's drummer and played with Duke right up till the time Duke died in 1974. I remember Rufus as Duke's nephew Stephen James and I always went to the NY performances of Duke's. I was living at Steve's house on 58th st. in NYC during the mid to late 1960's. Elvin Jones was very found of Rufus. Rufus had such amazing stick control that he cound execute a long roll with his hands way over his head, far away from the snare head and it was such a sight to behold. Rufus played in Maynard's band and Basie's band before Duke and he also had his own quintet for a very short while. I think that he should have gotten much more recognition as a great drummer but he remains today, in 2012, one of the UNSUNG heroes of Jazz Drumming. Today, my friend Dr. Marvin Bu Ga Lu Smith is one of the living UNSUNG heroes in 2012 and if it's the last thing I ever do, I will make him better known to the general public as there are few living today that can come close to his unique MASTERFULNESS in all areas of Jazz drumming, especially when you witness his amazing FREE FLOWING, MOMENT TO MOMENT, UNREHEARSED MOTION. Marvin is and always will be one of the greats, just like MAX,ELVIN,ART and my friend(RIP) Rufus Jones. Another great who was an unsung hero of drumming was my friend, Benny Golson's son Reggie(RIP). Reggie introduced Azar Lawrence to Elvin Jones and McCoy Tyner. We miss all you drummer cats and now we put our energy behind THE TRUTH IN 2012, DR. MARVIN BU GA LU SMITH. Marvin's brand new state of the art recording studio is a 48 track set up with expansion capability to 96 tracks by daisy chaining. Marvin has started a program teaching women all about drumming both using sticks with he and Andrew Greeney instructing and Koko Jones, formerly Whitney Houston's percussionist teaching the women hand drumming. TIME IS A DRUMMER'S MASTER...
I am not a fan of sitting around,
time passes without a sound.
When I rise in the morning,
I stand firm as I plant my feet.
I can feel the cosmos shift,
the universe cannot resist
swaying in my direction we make a connection.
I have control over this day,
I know just how it is going to play out without a doubt
Dispelling the negative as I say it out loud...
OUT LOUD! OUT LOUD! I give my words power.
From the back of my throat to the tip of my tongue
As each word rolls out
the energy cuts through a dark and heavy haze
Diminishing the lingering effects of a phase.
There is no time to beat the ground with my fists,
acknowledging shackles on my feet and wrists.
I placed them there myself in a time of confusion,
having found the keys to stretch free I shatter all illusions.
Looking in the mirror pieces I cannot deny my reflection
I do not speak of the physical manifestation
or your eyes perception.
I speak of the divine energy, the real me, the root of my being,
LOVE,COMPASSION,PEACE AND JOY. I AM HAPPY TO CELEBRATE
MY 65th BIRTHDAY WITH ALL OF YOU THIS SUNDAY, DEC. 4th
AND I HOPE THAT MY WORDS AND MUSIC TOUCH YOUR INSIDES
DEEPLY, BECAUSE YOU ALL ARE WHO I TRULY CARE ABOUT, MY FAMILY,
MY FRIENDS AND ALL THE MUSICAL ARTISTS OF THE WORLD, SPREADING,
THE MESSAGE OF GIVING, NOT TAKING, AND RECEIVING JOY KNOWING
YOU'VE MADE OTHERS HAPPY!
LOVE ALWAYS and ALWAYS LOVE,
I AM GRATEFUL FOR ALL OF MY FRIENDS,

Roach began playing in New York jazz clubs in the early 1940s. From those early days until his death in 2007, he never stopped creating and exploring new possibilities for jazz drumming. Today, Dr. Marvin Smith is alive and well as he journeys on to teaching and preserving Jazz Tradition. Max would be proud to be there watching Master Dr. Marvin Smith doing the work that needs to be done today in 2012. Marvin was written up in the February 2011 issue of Modern Drummer Magazine and he was part of Sun Ra's Arkestra and Archie Shepps quartets. He is a living legend.

This video saw over 200 hits in just a few hours of its posting. Maybe the cold weather in the Northeast motivated folks to check out VEGETABLE SOUP- Grandma's, a song performed by Dr. Marvin Smith and Steve Habib.

The Spirit is moving and today, January 4th,2012 is a mystical day. I knew something special was going down. Tomorrow, my mother turns 87, born January 5,1925. Interesting stuff.

Dr. Marvin Smith Vegetable Soup Grandma's

This was a beautiful session and one of the most spiritual tracks during The Melting Pot Drum Group Project. It was recorded in 2000 and 2001. Some was recorded at Tedesco Studios and some was recorded at Paul Hirsch's Studios...Roses.
Many different drummers were apart of this project in addition to Dr. Marvin Smith and Steve Habib, Koko Jones was involved and a long list of others to be published at another time as we compile the names for posting additional videos of the Melting Pot Drum Group Project.
More notes on this soon.
Love Always and Always Love,
HABIB
